Organised by a team of volunteers, TEDxTruro can only take place thanks to the sponsorship of local businesses, which are providing financial backing and a range of in-kind support. Mandy Reynolds, TEDxTruro Curator and Licensee, explains: “We are so grateful to the businesses who have stepped up to support us. TEDx is all about ‘ideas worth spreading’ and TEDxTruro is going to give us a fantastic platform to share some of the incredible ideas developing in Cornwall with the world. Quite simply without this generous financial and in-kind support, the event could not go ahead.”
Sponsors for the inaugural TEDxTruro event include local law firm and one of the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For Stephens Scown LLP. Digital marketing specialists Jarrang have produced the event website www.tedxtruro.com and will provide other digital marketing services.
Sue Bradbury PR will be supporting TEDxTruro with specialist public speaking coaching, while video production company PixelRain will be filming the TEDxTruro talks, helping to broadcast the exciting and creative ideas developing in Cornwall to an international audience. Local freelance photographer Verity Westcott will capture photography at the event.
Other sponsors include The Samphire Club, a private members club that promotes a better way of business networking throughout, and between, the South West and London. Truro’s luxury 4 star hotel The Alverton will also support TEDxTruro as a sponsor as will leading local printing and mailing company St Austell Printing Company.
Taking place on Friday, 9 September 2016 at Truro’s Burrell Theatre, the inaugural TEDxTruro event has the theme ‘Time and Tide’ and will see inspiring talks from speakers who have spent their lives creating change: some through researching and educating; others by facing and rising above adversity.
TED began in the USA in 1984 and is devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks of 18 minutes or less. Today TED covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. TED has become a viral video phenomenon and global community, with millions of people around the world watching and sharing TED talks online. TEDx events are inspired by TED, but are independent and self-organised.
