‘TED junkie’ and TEDxTruro 2016 event attendee Ewan McClymont tells us why he’s looking forward to this year’s event.
The inaugural TEDxTruro event last year was my first introduction to the world of TED and I must confess, it was since helped me find inspiration from a host of talented individuals. I’m therefore very much looking forward to the 2017 TEDxTruro on 27th October.
I have no particular favourite speaker from last year’s event – they were all gifted and inspirational in different ways. The diversity and mix of topics were a perfect blend, and the day was a bit of an emotional roller-coaster: laughter, sadness, surprise, delight. The day flew past, like a really good film that when the credits roll, you look at your watch and think, where did that go?
If I could sum up the day in one word – absorbing.
Being an inquisitive chap, I decided to do a bit of research into TED. Who is this TED guy? Well, not one guy but two guys as it turns out, certainly in the beginning anyway. TED was founded in 1984 by Ricky Wurman and Harry Mark. They had a theory that the world was witnessing a coming together of three industries – Technology, Entertainment and Design – hence TED. Well, they certainly got their theory right! I think 1984 was the year that Apple launched their first Macintosh computer and Sony brought out the compact disc. What an impact these two pieces of technology have had.
Now a TED junkie, I can recommend the TED mobile app, as well as Chris Anderson’s book, TED Talks, which is truly worth a read. Solid advice on how to ditch the notes and deliver punchy presentations, although mine is still work in progress.
The speaker line-up for the 2017 TEDxTruro is impressive – hope to see you there.
